Linking early life risk factors to frailty in old age: Evidence from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study
Age and Aging Jan 24, 2020
Li Y, et al. - Researchers analyzed a large, nationally representative cohort of community-dwelling Chinese sample, ie, 6,806 participants aged 60 years from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study, to determine the link of early life risk factors with frailty amongst older adults in this cross-sectional analysis. They found a lower risk of being frail in old age in relation to factors such as higher personal and paternal education attainment, better childhood neighbourhood quality and better childhood health status. A higher risk of prefrailty was observed in relation to severe starvation in childhood. Overall, an increased risk of late-life frailty may be seen among Chinese older adults who had unfavorable socioeconomic status and worse health conditions in childhood and adolescence.
