Limited value of end-expiratory inferior vena cava diameter to predict fluid responsiveness impact of intra-abdominal pressure

Intensive Care Medicine Feb 01, 2018

Vieillard-Baron A, et al. - The diagnostic ability of the end-expiratory inferior vena cava diameter (IVCEE) to predict fluid responsiveness (FR), as well as the potential confounding impact of intra-abdominal pressure (IAP), was investigated in this multicenter study. Moderate feasibility and poor predictive ability of IVCEE measurement for FR was apparent in ventilated patients, with IAP acting as a confounding factor. Overall, IVCEE might add some value to guide fluid therapy but should not be used alone for fluid prediction purposes.
