Limited evidence suggests that alveolar ridge preservation is more favorable than unassisted socket healing in minimizing alveolar ridge dimensional changes after extraction
The Journal of Evidence Based Dental Practice Mar 07, 2018
Tu V, et al. - Herein, alveolar ridge preservation vs unassisted socket healing were compared for minimizing alveolar ridge dimensional changes following tooth extraction. With respect to minimizing the alveolar ridge dimensional changes from the process of bone remodeling, alveolar ridge preservation (socket grafting) in general seemed to produce more favorable outcomes than not using grafting materials. In minimizing bone height reduction, out of the 7 grafting materials included in the Bayesian network meta-analysis, freeze-dried bone grafts with membrane were seen to be the most effective. Autologous bone marrow had the most positive impact in minimizing bone width reduction during remodeling.
