American Journal of Preventive Medicine Aug 29, 2018
Peterson C, et al. - Using a mathematical model to combine the data from previous studies with 2012 U.S. National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey data, researchers estimated the U.S. lifetime per-victim cost and economic burden of intimate partner violence. Per female victim and per male victim, $103,767 and $23,414, respectively, were the estimated intimate partner violence lifetime cost, or a population economic burden of nearly $3.6 trillion (2014 US$) over victims’ lifetimes was reported, based on 43 million U.S. adults with victimization history. In this estimate, medical costs incurred $2.1 trillion (59% of total), lost productivity among victims and perpetrators incurred $1.3 trillion (37%), criminal justice activities $73 billion (2%), and other costs, including victim property loss or damage, were $62 billion (2%). Overall, they concluded that, it is possible to prevent intimate partner violence and this could avoid substantial costs.
