Lifestyle habits associated with nocturnal urination frequency: The Nagahama study
Neurourology and Urodynamics Sep 12, 2019
Tabara Y, et al. - Researchers sought to determine the dietary habits, eating behaviors, and sleep characteristics that are associated with nocturia in order to assess modifiable lifestyle factors for nocturia. In this cross-sectional study of 5,683 community residents (64.5 ± 7.7 years old), an increase in the frequency of nocturnal urination with age was noted. Male gender (β = 0.090), hypertension (β = 0.038), sleep apnea (β = 0.030), B-type natriuretic peptide level (β = 0.089), and spot urine sodium excretion (β = −0.058) were identified as other basic factors associated with the frequency. Nocturnal urination frequency was noted to be independently correlated with the following dietary factors: coffee (≥ 1 time/day: β = −0.059, P < 0.001) and green vegetable consumption (≥ 1 time/week: β = −0.042, P = 0.001). They observed an inverse association of later bedtime with nocturnal urination frequency; this was observed independent of sleep duration (before 23:00: β = −0.096; before 24:00: β = −0.225; after midnight: β = −0.240; all P < 0.001).
