Life-threatening complications among women with severe ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome
American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology Mar 15, 2019
Selter J, et al. - Researchers studied 11,562 patients who were hospitalized with severe ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome from 2002 to 2011 from the Nationwide Inpatient Sample, to assess the risk factors for life-threatening complications for patients with severe ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome in a United States nationwide sample. In 4.4% of patients, life-threatening complications occurred (deep vein thrombosis/pulmonary embolism, 2.2%; acute renal failure; acute respiratory distress syndrome, 0.9%; intubation, 0.5%). A higher risk for life-threatening complications was observed among patients with common medical comorbidities. These complications are observed increasing hospital costs and hospital burden. They suggest performing closer monitoring of at-risk patients in view of the increasing number of in vitro fertilization patients with medical comorbidities.
