“Cognitive behavioral rehabilitation for bipolar disorder patients: A randomized controlled trial”
Bipolar Disorders May 02, 2019
Gomes BC, et al. - In this trial involving 39 patients with bipolar type I or II disorder, researchers investigated the efficacy of a new intervention developed to address both cognitive and functional impairment. They randomized patients to either treatment as usual or cognitive behavior rehabilitation (CBR), an add-on treatment delivered in 12 weekly group sessions. After the end of the intervention, they noted significantly improved reaction time, visual memory, and emotion recognition in CBR-treated individuals. In bipolar disorder, promisingly results regarding improvement in some of the commonly impaired cognitive domains could be achieved with the CBR intervention, according to findings. The researchers concluded that a longer follow-up period may be necessary to identify changes in functional and quality-of-life domains.
