Ketamine for refractory status epilepticus: A systematic review
CNS Drugs Sep 23, 2018
Rosati A, et al. - Via this review, researchers tested ketamine's effectiveness and safety as a treatment option for refractory status epilepticus in pediatric and adult populations. They used the PubMed database, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews and ClinicalTrials.gov website for a literature search. Twenty-seven case reports including 30 individuals and 14 case series, six of which had children, were included in the literature. With a sample size ranging from 5 to 67 patients (median 11), 12 case series of treatment of 248 individuals (29 children) with a median age of 43.5 years (range 2 months to 67 years) were analyzed. Findings showed the efficacy of ketamine in treating refractory status epilepticus, but no firm conclusion could be drawn due to methodological limitations that hampered the available studies. Ketamine was twice as efficacious if administered early, irrespective of the status epilepticus type.
