Junctional melanocytic hyperplasia overlying benign fibrous papule: An under‐recognized variant of a common lesion
Journal of Cutaneous Pathology Jun 08, 2020
Krauland K, et al. - Since a number of histologic variants of fibrous papule (angiofibroma), a common benign tumor often presenting as an erythematous papule on the face of an adult, most commonly on the nose, are described, including a variant with junctional melanocytic hyperplasia that may be similar to lentigo maligna, however, these lesions have an unremarkable clinical course and are clinically consistent with a benign fibrous papule, researchers analyzed 449 fibrous papules from 425 patients, finding junctional melanocytic hyperplasia noticeable at scanning magnification in 2.9%. Dermatologists and pathologists should be aware that benign fibrous papules may display junctional melanocytic hyperplasia that may resemble melanoma in‐situ.
