Joint anatomy in axial spondyloarthritis: Strong associations between sacroiliac joint form variation and symptomatic disease
Rheumatology Apr 10, 2021
Ziegeler K, Kreutzinger V, Proft F, et al. - This study was sought to ascertain the prevalence of variant sacroiliac joint forms in symptomatic patients with mechanical joint disease and axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) compared with control patients. In this cross-sectional study, researchers recruited a total of 973 patients (95 axSpA; 61 MJD; 817 controls); clinical diagnosis, age and gender were noted. They applied an established scoring system to verify joint forms on computed tomography scans of the pelvis. They compared frequencies of joint forms between groups (axial spondyloarthritis; mechanical joint disease; controls). A significant correlation was found between atypical joint forms and symptomatic joint disease.
