Isolation of Enterobacteriaceae in airway samples is associated with worse outcome in preschool children with cystic fibrosis
Journal of Cystic Fibrosis Nov 13, 2019
Vermeulen F, et al. - Given Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA) colonisation is preceded by increased abundance of Enterobacteriaceae (EB) in the respiratory microbiome of young CF patients, researchers investigated if the growth of EB in routine airway cultures can predict impending PA colonisation and if there is a contribution of EB to CF lung disease severity. Via retrospective analysis, 62 children with CF were analyzed for growth of EB and PA during the first 5 years of life and subsequent best lung function at ages 5–7 and 9–11 years. Findings revealed the isolation of EB in just over half of the children among preschool children with CF. More commonly, PA was isolated in that subgroup. Worse lung function was observed at a later age in relation to both EB and PA isolation.
