Is early measles vaccination associated with stronger survival benefits than later measles vaccination?
BMC Public Health Aug 11, 2018
Hansen JS, et al. - Given the possibility that measles vaccine (MV) protect against non-measles mortality, researchers investigated if age of measles vaccination was a factor that could determine survival. They performed Cox proportional-hazards models adjusted for age and village cluster in children under 5 years of age followed in Bandim Health Project to compare the survival of children vaccinated with MV early (< 9 months), as recommended (9–11 months), or late (> 12+ months) with the survival of children unvaccinated for measles. They noted a big advantage in survival associated with early MV. Optimization of the impact of MV on child survival may not be achieved with the current policy to increase vaccination age.
