Is calcifediol better than cholecalciferol for vitamin D supplementation?
Osteoporosis International May 05, 2018
Quesada-Gomez JM, et al. - Experts defined the relative efficacy of oral cholecalciferol (vitamin D3) vs oral calcifediol (25OHD3) for improving the vitamin D status by reviewing all publications dealing with a comparison of both compounds. Findings suggested a higher rate of intestinal absorption of oral calcifediol and in case of decreased intestinal absorption capacity due to a variety of diseases, this could have important advantages. Irrespective of baseline serum 25OHD, a potential additional advantage of oral calcifediol was a linear dose-response curve, whereas the rise in serum 25OHD was lower after oral cholecalciferol when baseline serum 25OHD was higher. Compared with greater fluctuations after intermittent oral cholecalciferol, intermittent intake of calcifediol resulted in fairly stable serum 25OHD.
