Investigating the role of hallucinatory experiences in the transition from suicidal thoughts to attempts
Acta Psychiatrica Scandinavica Dec 13, 2019
Hielscher E, et al. - Given the strong association of psychotic experiences, including auditory hallucinatory experiences (HEs), with both suicidal thoughts and behavior, researchers investigated their role in the ideation-to-attempt transition in adolescents, including their direct and indirect effect via potential mediators. An Australian prospective longitudinal cohort of 1,669 adolescents (12–17 years) comprised the participants. Among these, 216 adolescents reported suicidal ideation at baseline; 6.5% of these attempted suicide during follow-up. The size of auditory HEs’ univariate effect implies a possible powerful association with a heightened risk of incident suicide attempts. HEs in accompaniment with distress were correlated with a nine-fold heightened risk of acting on suicidal thoughts.
