Intrauterine mepivacaine instillation for pain relief during intrauterine device insertion in nulliparous women: A double-blind randomized controlled trial
Contraception Mar 07, 2019
Envall N, et al. - Researchers assessed the influence of intrauterine mepivacaine instillation before intrauterine device (IUD) insertion on pain when compared to placebo. In 86 women 18 years of age or older, a double-blind, randomized, controlled trial was done to compare mepivacaine 1%, 10 ml vs 0.9% NaCl intrauterine instillation using a hydrosonography catheter 5 min before IUD insertion. As per outcomes, the reduction in pain was modest in correlation with intrauterine mepivacaine instillation before IUD insertion, however, participants' favorable subjective reaction indicates a possible clinical significance of the effect size.
