Intra-operative evaluation of prophylactic hysterectomy and salpingo-oophorectomy specimens in hereditary gynaecological cancer syndromes
Histopathology Apr 23, 2018
Wong S, et al. - Researchers enquired regarding the prophylactic total hysterectomy (TH) and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy (BSO) cases with the intention of evaluating the presence of gross findings, frozen and permanent section sampling practices, frozen section diagnoses and diagnostic discrepancies. As per the outcomes, 19 patients reported a final diagnosis of malignancy or premalignancy on permanent sections. Among these cases, 8 had a corresponding gross lesion (42%) and could have been diagnosed on frozen section. Nonetheless, only 1 of them underwent intra-operative evaluation (IOE). Yielded data underscored the potential benefits and challenges of IOE in this setting.
