Intra and post-operative complications observed with femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery vs conventional phacoemulsification surgery: A systematic review and meta-analysis

BMC Ophthalmology Aug 17, 2019

Wang J, et al. - In this investigation involving 7,156 participants, researchers systematically compared the complications which were correlated with femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery (FLACS) compared with the conventional phacoemulsification surgery (CPE). According to results, FLACS was linked to significantly higher risks of incomplete capsulotomy, anterior capsulotomy tag and anterior capsular tear. In addition, the risks for macular/corneal edema, and elevated intra-ocular pressure were significantly higher with FLACS. The risks for impaired descemet’s membrane, zonular dialysis, vitreous loss and posterior capsular tear, however, were not significantly different. In comparison to CPE, FLACS did not improve intra/post-operative complications. This hypothesis should be confirmed by further larger studies.
