Interstitial lung disease is a risk factor for ischaemic heart disease and myocardial infarction

Heart Mar 08, 2020

Clarson LE, Bajpai R, Whittle R, et al. - Given that there is a poor understanding of the risk of ischaemic heart disease (IHD) and myocardial infarction (MI) in interstitial lung disease (ILD) despite several shared risk factors as well as pathophysiological pathways, and this knowledge gap could be preventing patients who may benefit from screening for these cardiovascular diseases from receiving it, so, researchers performed this population-based cohort analysis to address this topic. This study involved 68,572 patients (11,688 ILD exposed; 56,884 unexposed controls). Experts matched ILD-exposed patients (pulmonary sarcoidosis or idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (PF)) to those without ILD or IHD/MI, by age, gender, registered general practice and available follow-up time. Following adjustment for established cardiovascular risk factors, an independent link of ILD, especially PF, with MI and IHD was evident. Based on the findings, clinicians were recommended to prioritize targeted evaluation of cardiovascular risk among patients suffering from ILD, especially those aged 60–69 years.
