Internet-delivered cognitive behavior therapy for atopic dermatitis: A randomized clinical trial

JAMA May 24, 2021

Hedman-Lagerlöf E, Fust J, Axelsson E, et al. - In this randomized clinical trial involving 102 participants (mean [SD] age, 37 [11] years; 83 [81%] female), researchers examined the effectiveness of a highly scalable internet-delivered cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) for adults with atopic dermatitis. The sample consisted of adults with atopic dermatitis who received 12 weeks of internet-delivered CBT from March 29, 2017, to February 16, 2018. Participants were randomly assigned in a 1:1 ratio to either 12 weeks of therapist-guided internet-delivered CBT (n = 51) or a control condition (n = 51) that provided standard care instructions. Despite the fact that it requires few therapist resources, internet-delivered CBT appears to be effective for reducing atopic dermatitis symptoms. As a result, internet-delivered CBT has the potential to expand access to effective adjunct behavioral treatment for patients suffering from this common skin condition.
