International trends in incidence of osteosarcoma (1988 ‐ 2012)
International Journal of Cancer May 13, 2021
Rojas GA, Hubbard AK, Diessner BJ, et al. - Given osteosarcoma (OS) etiology remains largely concealed but may be informed by comparisons of incidence and trends between geographic areas, researchers herein describe OS age‐standardized incidence rates (ASRs; cases/million) as well as average annual percent change and 95% confidence intervals by geographic region among the age groups 0‐9, 10‐19, 20‐29, 30‐59, 60‐79, 0‐79, by utilizing the Cancer Incidence in Five Continents (CI5) data from 1988‐2012. In 2008‐2012, OS incidence varied little between geographic regions across all age‐groups. ASR for 0‐79 ranged from 2 cases per million in Southern Asia to 4.2 in Sub‐Saharan Africa. Across 1988‐2012, relatively stable OS incidence was noted, with the only statistically significant rises in the 0‐79 age group noted in Eastern Asia and Sub‐Saharan Africa. The finding of small difference in incidence between regions as well as the observed stability in incidence over time both are indicative of the absence of any impact of environmental or time‐varying exposures on OS carcinogenesis.
