Integrated stepped alcohol treatment for patients with HIV and alcohol use disorder: A randomized controlled trial

The Lancet HIV Aug 03, 2019

Edelman EJ, Maisto SA, Hansen NB, et al. - Researchers investigated how integrated stepped alcohol treatment (ISAT) affects alcohol use and HIV outcomes among patients living with HIV and alcohol use disorder. They conducted a multisite, randomized, controlled trial, in five Veterans Affairs-based HIV clinics in the United States, enrolling individuals living with HIV and an alcohol use disorder who were not otherwise receiving formal alcohol treatment. From January 28, 2013, to July 14, 2017, 128 eligible patients for inclusion were identified and randomly assigned to receive ISAT (n = 63) or treatment as usual (n = 65). Outcomes revealed increased receipt of alcohol treatment medications and counseling in correlation with ISAT without changes in drinking at week 24. These findings support the necessity for strategies to implement and enhance ISAT.
