Insulin dependence is associated with increased medical complications and mortality after shoulder arthroscopy
Arthroscopy Apr 16, 2019
Traven SA, et al. - Researchers examined the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program database from 2005-2016 to assess the complications following shoulder arthroscopy among those with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM), patients with non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM), and nondiabetic cases. They ultimately included 50,626 nondiabetic patients, 5,332 NIDDM patients, and 2,484 IDDM patients. A higher risk of medical complications was recorded in participants with IDDM, including pulmonary complications as well as urinary tract infections. They also found a greater risk of 30-day hospital admission and 30-day mortality among individuals with IDDM. Similar risks of medical and surgical complications, unplanned hospital admission, and death were seen in nondiabetic patients and patients with NIDDM.
