Insomnia symptoms and obesity are associated with aggression independent of depression in patients with epilepsy
Seizure - European Journal of Epilepsy Dec 11, 2019
Lee SA, et al. - Since there was little research conducted into aggression in persons with epilepsy (PWE), researchers performed this cross-sectional study to ascertain if sleep disturbances and obesity were correlated with aggression in PWE independent of psychological distress. The study used the Aggression Questionnaire (AQ-K), the Insomnia Severity Index (ISI), the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS), the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), and the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7). A stepwise linear regression analysis has been utilized. In total, 104 candidates (49% men) were involved. Data reported that mean AQ-K score was 51.4 (SD 12.6). In 26.9% and 24.0% of participants, respectively, PHQ-9 scores ≥ 10 and GAD-7 scores ≥ 7 were recorded. AQ-K scores were positively linked to PHQ-9 scores ≥ 10, ISI scores, BMI, and composite scores of epilepsy severity in a stepwise linear regression model. Symptoms of insomnia and obesity were associated with aggressive overall behavior in PWE regardless of symptoms of depression. The various factors including male gender, obesity, depressive symptoms, anxiety, insomnia symptoms, epilepsy severity, polytherapy, and the use of perampanel, linked the individual subscales of the AQ differently.
