Inherited thrombophilia and the risk of arterial ischemic stroke: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Journal of the American Heart Association Oct 04, 2019
Chiasakul T, De Jesus E, Tong J, et al. - Researchers analyzed data from relevant published case-control or cohort studies, to evaluate the risk of arterial ischemic stroke in adults in correlation with inherited thrombophilia (factor V Leiden, prothrombin G20210A mutation, protein C deficiency, protein S deficiency, and antithrombin deficiency). They identified the relevant studies from PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library Databases from inception to December 31, 2018. Overall 68 eligible studies, including 11,916 stroke patients and 96,057 controls were identified. An increased risk of arterial ischemic stroke was found in adults in relation to inherited thrombophilias (factor V Leiden, prothrombin G20210A mutation, protein C deficiency, and protein S deficiency). Further research is needed to define the implications of these results with respect to the clinical management of patients with ischemic stroke.
