Influence of biofilms on morbidity associated with short-term indwelling ureteral stents: A prospective observational study
World Journal of Urology Aug 11, 2019
Betschart P, Zumstein V, Buhmann MT, et al. - Individuals (n = 94) who underwent temporary ureteral stenting for secondary ureterorenoscopy due to urinary calculi were prospectively involved in a study by the experts with an intention to assess the impact of biofilms on morbidity related to short-term ureteral stenting using contemporary methods of biofilm examination and verified evaluation of symptoms. Between the total biofilm mass and Ureteral Stent Symptoms Questionnaire (USSQ) total score, no association was discovered. Relationships between biofilm features and morbidity were usually weak and not important. Between biofilm mass and hematuria, and between the number of bacteria and the USSQ subscore, notable associations could be ascertained for pain and the consumption of analgesics. Therefore, on the basis of the elaborated biofilm investigation methods and validated self-reported outcome measures, the findings exhibited that, in short-term ureteral stenting, biofilms might exacerbate some lower urinary tract symptoms, however, were not the principal trigger for stent-associated morbidity.
