Inflammatory mediators and the risk of falls among older women with acute low back pain: Data from Back Complaints in the Elders (BACE)—Brazil
European Spine Journal Oct 20, 2019
de Queiroz BZ, de Britto Rosa NM, Pereira DS, et al. - In this cross-sectional study including a subsample of elderly women from the Back Complaints in the Elders international cohort study, researchers examined the relationship between plasma levels of inflammatory cytokines (interleukin [IL]-1-β, IL-6, tumor necrosis factor [TNF]-α, and the soluble TNF receptor 1 [sTNF-R1]), disability, and risk of falls in elderly women with acute low back pain (LBP). One hundred and ten women with acute LBP were involved. The regression model exhibited a correlation between the risk of falls and IL-6 levels, pain, speed of gait, and years of education. It also described 21.2% of risk of falls difference. Hence, in older women with LBP, the study exhibited a relationship between risk of falls and IL-6, pain, speed of gait, and level of education.
