Inflammation in mild cognitive impairment due to Parkinson's disease, Lewy body disease, and Alzheimer's disease
International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry May 22, 2019
King E, et al. - Since progression in neurodegenerative diseases has already been associated with inflammation, researchers investigated the inflammatory profile in patients with Parkinson disease with early stages of cognitive impairment (PD-MCI), patients with prodromal Alzheimer disease (MCI-AD), prodromal Lewy body disease (MCI-LB), and controls. Patients with PD-MCI had an inflammation level similar to controls, but inflammation was increased in patients with MCI-LB and MCI-AD vs controls. Decreasing inflammation was noted to be associated with deteriorating motor severity. Patients with MCI-LB and MCI-AD may benefit from anti-inflammatory medications. Patients with PD-MCI may show fewer benefits with anti-inflammatory medication, though inflammation may be involved in the onset of cognitive decline in patients with MCI-AD and MCI-LB so these patients may see the most benefit at the earliest stages of disease.
