Infection during delivery hospitalization and risk of readmission for postpartum stroke
Stroke Aug 22, 2019
Miller EC, et al. - Using the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project’s National Readmissions Database from 2010 to 2014, researchers carried out a retrospective cohort study to test the assumption that infections diagnosed during a delivery admission would be correlated with an increased risk of readmission for postpartum stroke. Two thousand one hundred twenty-eight were readmitted within 30 days for a stroke of any type out of 17.2 million delivery admissions during the study period. Investigators found that infection during delivery hospitalization was linked to increased risk of ischemic stroke (IS) readmission, but not hemorrhagic stroke, within 30 days postpartum, especially in women with no hypertensive disorders of pregnancy. Even in the absence of other risk factors, the infection can play a role in triggering postpartum IS.
