Independent association between cardio-ankle vascular index and sarcopenia in older U.K. adults
Journal of the American Geriatrics Society Feb 15, 2019
Kirkham FA, et al. - Researchers examined if there is a correlation between sarcopenia and arterial stiffness in Caucasians, focusing on the link between skeletal mass index (SMI) and the cardio-ankle vascular index (CAVI) to assess the value of CAVI in predicting sarcopenia. They analyzed adults in the UK aged 45 years and over (N = 366, n = 177 male, n = 189 female) identifying a significant association between average CAVI and SMI, with a higher association in women than men. The findings suggest the potential utility of CAVI in assessing vascular compliance, and may have value as an operator-independent means to measure sarcopenia and its cardiovascular impact in older adults.
