Increased systemic levels of inflammatory mediators following one-stage full-mouth scaling and root planing
Journal of Periodontal Research Aug 18, 2018
Morozumi T, et al. - In this prospective intervention study, authors evaluated the systemic and local biological responses after full-mouth scaling and root planing (FM-SRP). Six weeks after treatment, clinical and microbiological improvement was achieved with FM-SRP, but 1-day post-treatment, it produced a moderate systemic acute-phase response including elevated inflammatory mediators. One day after treatment, they noted marked increases in hs-CRP, IL-5, IL-6, IL-12p70 and tumor necrosis factor-α in the gingival crevicular fluid. For most time points, endotoxin levels were below measurable limits.
