Increased risk of ischemic heart disease after kidney donation
Nephrology Dialysis Transplantation Feb 28, 2021
Haugen AJ, Hallan S, Langberg NE, et al. - Researchers sought to determine the occurrence of ischemic heart disease and cerebrovascular disease, diabetes as well as malignancy in live kidney donors vs healthy controls eligible for donation. Among 1,029 kidney donors as well as 16,084 controls, experts evaluated different diagnoses. Findings revealed the presence of an elevated risk of ischemic heart disease in kidney donors, vs healthy controls, during long-term follow-up. For the risks of cerebrovascular disease, diabetes or cancer, no significant differences were found. These data may be crucial in the observation and selection process of living kidney donors.
