Increased risk of hypogonadal symptoms in shift workers with shift work sleep disorder
Urology Feb 14, 2020
Balasubramanian A, Kohn TP, Santiago JE, et al. - Investigators sought to explore the correlation between shift work sleep disorder (SWSD), a primary circadian rhythm disorder characterized by excessive daytime sleepiness associated with shift work, and hypogonadal symptoms in shift workers. Between July 2014 and June 2017, men presenting to an andrology clinic completed questionnaires evaluating shift work schedule, SWSD risk, and hypogonadal symptoms ([quantitative] Androgen Deficiency in the Aging Male [qADAM, ADAM]). Compared with day-time workers and nonstandard shift workers without SWSD, nonstandard shift workers with SWSD have even worse hypogonadal symptoms and lower T levels. This implies that poor sleep habits, as distinguished by SWSD, may give to the more severe hypogonadal symptoms observed in nonstandard shift workers.
