Increased risk of Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia in hemodialysis—A nationwide study
Hemodialysis International Jul 11, 2019
Chaudry MS, et al. - Using the Danish National Registry on Regular Dialysis and Transplantation, researchers determined the incidence as well as risk factors for Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia (SAB) according to hemodialysis access type in patients with end-stage kidney disease. This study included 9,997 patients and the occurrence of SAB was reported in 1,278 patients (12.8%). A high incidence of SAB was reported in patients on hemodialysis, especially those undergoing hemodialysis via central venous catheter (CVC). For cuffed and uncuffed CVC, the observed risk of SAB was similar. The factors that were found to be independently related to SAB were diabetes mellitus, male sex, and the first 3 months in renal replacement therapy.
