Increased lipid and lipoprotein concentrations in anorexia nervosa: A systematic review and meta-analysis
International Journal of Eating Disorders Apr 30, 2019
Hussain AA, et al. - Conducting a systematic literature review and meta-analysis, researchers assessed changes in lipid concentrations in acutely-ill anorexia nervosa (AN) patients compared with healthy controls (HC). In addition, they investigated how partial weight restoration influence the concentrations. For review, they identified 48 studies as eligible; for meta-analyses calculating mean differences, 33 were eligible. Acutely-ill AN cases display significantly higher total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein, low-density lipoprotein, triglycerides, and apolipoprotein B than HC. Higher total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein were noted in partially weight-restored AN patients. No significant differences were evident between pre- vs post-weight restoration differences in lipid concentrations. These findings suggest an underlying adaptation or dysregulation that did not fully reverse by weight restoration.
