Incidence rates of severe cutaneous adverse reactions due to antiseizure medication: A nationwide study using health claims data in Korea
Epilepsia Dec 08, 2020
Chung SJ, Ahn KM, Oh JH, et al. - The present study was conducted to ascertain the incidence rates (IRs) of severe cutaneous adverse reactions (SCARs) resulting from the use of seven commonly prescribed antiseizure medications (ASMs) (carbamazepine, phenytoin, oxcarbazepine, lamotrigine, zonisamide, levetiracetam, and topiramate) and to evaluate the related risks among the drugs. A nationwide health claims database was utilized to select patients prescribed with one of the target ASMs. Researchers characterized a SCAR case as the first hospitalization with one of three specific codes provided by the International Classification of Diseases, 10th revision (L511, L512, and L27). The IR of SCARs according to each target ASM was estimated. In Asia, this is the first study to ascertain the IRs of SCARs for various ASMs and correlate the rates across drugs using a large dataset. The outcomes of this research should help clinicians select safer ASMs in practice.
