Incidence, predictors and clinical impact of permanent pacemaker insertion in women following transcatheter aortic valve implantation: Insights from a prospective multinational registry
Catheterization and Cardiovascular Interventions Jun 16, 2021
Nicolas J, Guedeney P, Claessen BE, et al. - Researchers sought to determine the incidence, predictors, as well as the clinical effect of permanent pacemaker insertion (PPI) post-transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) among women. Patients without preprocedural pacemakers were included and were categorized into two groups: (1) PPI and (2) no-PPI. This study involved 922 patients. Occurrence of post-TAVR PPI in 132 (14.3%) patients was documented. A high risk of post-TAVR PPI was observed in relation to pre-existing right bundle branch block (RBBB), while a lower risk was noted in relation to implantation of balloon-expandable prosthesis. Findings revealed that women frequently received pacemaker implantation post-TAVR. Pacemaker implantation after TAVR was shown to be related to pre-existing RBBB and valve type. A prolonged hospital stay resulted from PPI although 1-year outcomes were not significantly affected by PPI.
