Incidence of syncope during pregnancy: Temporal trends and outcomes
Journal of the American Heart Association May 20, 2019
Chatur S, et al. - In this retrospective study of women who experienced syncope during pregnancy, researchers analyzed temporal trends, timing, and frequency, and adverse neonatal and maternal outcomes seen in the first postpartum year. An episode of syncope occurred in 4,667 of 481,930 pregnancies included from the province of Alberta, Canada. In the age-adjusted incidence of syncope, a 5% increase/year was revealed in Poisson regression analysis. Younger and primiparous women had syncope vs women without syncope. A higher risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes and an increased incidence of cardiac arrhythmia and syncope postpartum could be observed among pregnant women with syncope, particularly when the syncopal event happened during the first trimester.
