Incidence of supraventricular tachycardia after inhaled short-acting beta agonist treatment in children
Journal of Asthma Jan 14, 2020
Woodward S, et al. - Given that supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) can be induced by albuterol and there is a lack of knowledge regarding clinical features, incidence, as well as risk factors of SVT following inhaled SABA treatment in children, so, researchers report cases of SVT during asthma therapy in hospital-based settings by performing this review of regional care delivery. They also reported the incidence of SVT as well as risk factors of SABA-induced SVT. Using the Intermountain Healthcare EDW, they selected hospital-based care episodes of children 0-18 years old. For SVT, the estimated incidence was 3.9 per 10,000 episodes of SABA treatment, and 5.1 per 10,000 children with asthma taking hospital-based asthma care. No death occurred in individuals with SVT. No studied variables were found to be related to SABA-induced SVT. Findings revealed a rare incidence of SVT during hospital-based treatment for acute asthma using inhaled SABAs, as well as demonstrated low morbidity and mortality associated with SVT.
