Incidence of patients with non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis in Germany – A healthcare insurance claims data analysis
Respiratory Medicine Apr 16, 2019
Diel R, et al. - In this investigation, researchers evaluated the incidence of non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis (NCFB) patients in Germany in 2013 and analyzed comorbidities and basic resource use patterns. To identify incident patients with NCFB in 2013, a representative sample of 3,988,648 anonymized persons covered by German public statutory health insurances was used. Following extrapolation of the 728 patients found in the reference insurance database to the general population, they estimated that in 2013 a total of 17,095 NCFB patients were newly diagnosed as having NCFB across the country. The manuscript displays the first results for bronchiectasis incidence in Germany. The most frequent predisposing conditions were COPD, asthma and gastroesophageal reflux. In the 75–79 age group for males and 70–74 and 75–79 years for females, the peak of antibiotic treatment was observed. During 2013, the majority of patients diagnosed received at least two prescriptions. Although hospital admissions due to exacerbation in the first year of diagnosis of NCFB are not uncommon, it is also necessary to consider outpatient burden and costs as a major part of care. In view of NCFB's increasing recognition, a better understanding of the disease's economic burden is needed in order to improve patient management. For this, prospective studies are needed in more detail.
