Incidence of long-term opioid use among opioid-naive patients with hidradenitis suppurativa in the United States
JAMA Dermatology Nov 24, 2019
Reddy S, et al. - In a population of opioid-naive patients with hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) and control patients, researchers compared overall and subgroup incidence of long-term opioid use. Participants in the study were 22,277 patients with HS. According to this retrospective cohort study, the crude 1-year incidence of long-term opioid use among opioid-naive patients with HS was 0.33% vs 0.14% among controls. After controlling for relevant confounders, the risk of long-term opioid use was 53% greater in patients with HS. Such findings suggest that patients with HS can benefit from periodic pain assessment and opioid misuse screening, especially among individuals who are older, who smoke tobacco, or who have depression and other medical comorbidities.
