Incidence, morbidity and mortality of hip fractures over a period of 20 years in a health area of Southern Spain
BMJ Open Sep 28, 2020
Rey-Rodriguez MM, Vazquez-Gamez MA, Giner M, et al. - The incidence of osteoporotic hip fracture in the Macarena Health Area (Seville) was determined via performing a prospective observational study of all osteoporotic hip fractures occurring between March 2013 and February 2014 at the Clinical Unit of Traumatology and Orthopedics. The incidence determined was then compared with the incidence reported in two prior studies carried out with the same methodology in 1994 and 2006. Observations revealed the overall incidence of 228 per 100,000 individuals/year indicating a high incidence of osteoporotic hip fracture; relative to men, women had higher incidence. Over time, a decrease was observed in the incidence rate in women in all age groups, while an increase was noted in the incidence rate among men. In men, it is linked with a higher mortality than in women. Following factors were noted to be linked with overall mortality: a body mass index below 25 kg/m2, renal failure and low plasma proteins.
