Incidence and risk factors for macular oedema after primary rhegmatogenous retinal detachment surgery: A prospective single-centre study
Acta Ophthalmologica Jun 27, 2021
Gebler M, Pfeiffer S, Callizo J, et al. - Researchers conducted this prospective single-centre study to evaluate the incidence of cystoid macular oedema (CME) diagnosed by spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) after primary rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) surgery. One hundred fifty patients (150 eyes) presenting with primary RRD were included consecutively from April 2016 to October 2017. One hundred and twenty-eight of the 150 patients completed the study, with 107 (age: 61.7 ± 11.5 years, mean ± SD) demonstrating successful retinal attachment during follow-up visits. This prospective study verified that postoperative CME is a common complication after RRD surgery, with epiretinal membrane and macula-off RRD identified as potential risk factors. Because CME may cause visual recovery to be delayed, postoperative follow-ups should include SD-OCT.
