Incidence and prevalence of granuloma annulare in the United States
JAMA Jun 15, 2021
Barbieri JS, Rodriguez O, Rosenbach M, et al. - In this cross-sectional study, researchers estimated the population-based incidence and prevalence of granuloma annulare in the United States and identified the most commonly prescribed treatments. In total, 11,608 patients with incident granuloma annulare (8,680 female patients [74.8%]; mean [SD] age, 56.5 [18.8] years) and 17,862 patients with prevalent granuloma annulare (13,548 female patients [75.8%]; mean [SD] age, 56.6 [18.5] years) were identified. According to results, granuloma annulare has an annualized incidence of 0.04% and an annualized prevalence of 0.06%, with a 3:1 female to male ratio, and a peak incidence and prevalence in the fifth decade of life. Granuloma annulare is an uncommon disease that affects mostly women and middle-aged to older individuals in the United States. This cross-sectional study's findings provide important context for the basic epidemiology and overall burden of granuloma annulare in the United States.
