Incidence and predictors of aorta calcification in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus
Lupus Feb 14, 2019
Hu L, et al. - Authors studied 641 candidates to examine the prevalence and risk factors of artery calcification in subjects with systemic lupus erythematosus. Using the Agatston Score method, they quantified the calcification score from the multi-detector computed tomography scan image. They observed the total incidence of artery calcification, 25.9%, of which the aorta calcium and coronary artery calcification were 23.1% and 8.4%, respectively. They noted a positive association of aorta calcium score with age. They also found young individuals more prone to aorta calcium. They suggested that the presence of serositis, pneumonia, and higher Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Disease Activity Index (SLEDAI) score might predict an increased risk of aorta calcium.
