Improving health-related quality of life in glaucoma during 11 years and its association with vision loss and treatment of the disease
Acta Ophthalmologica May 25, 2021
Purola PKM, Nättinen JE, Parkkari MM, et al. - Researchers conducted the study for analyzing the influence of glaucoma on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and mental health in the ageing population of Finland. In total, 7,380 and 5,774 Finnish individuals aged 30 years and older with known eye disease status were studied in two population-based surveys in 2000 and 2011, respectively, with an 11-year follow-up of 4,683 candidates. Glaucoma patients have lower HRQoL and mental health, which is associated with vision loss regardless of disease awareness or treatment. However, this effect seems to be fading over time, and newly diagnosed glaucoma has no substantial impact on HRQoL or mental wellbeing.
