Improvement after two sessions of electroconvulsive therapy predicts final remission in inpatients with major depression
Acta Psychiatrica Scandinavica May 23, 2019
Birkenhager TK, et al. - In severely depressed inpatients receiving electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), researchers examined the predictive value of early improvement (after two ECT sessions) for eventual remission. This prospective cohort study included 89 MDD inpatients treated with bilateral ECT. Observations suggest that after two ECT sessions, assessment of early improvement during an ECT course could be done. The improvement is defined as a 15% reduction in the MADRS score and is identified to be a moderately sensitive predictor for eventual remission in this inpatient population.
