Improved long-term survival with home hemodialysis compared with institutional hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis: A matched cohort study
BMC Nephrology Feb 20, 2019
Rydell H, et al. - In comparison with institutional hemodialysis (IHD) and peritoneal dialysis (PD), researchers analyzed the long-term effects of home hemodialysis (HHD) on patient survival and subsequent renal transplantation, taking into account age and comorbidity. According to gender, age, Charlson Comorbidity Index and the start date of RRT, patients who started HHD as initial renal replacement therapy (RRT) were matched with patients on IHD or PD using the Swedish Renal Registry from 1991 to 2012. In comparison with IHD and PD, HHD as initial RRT showed improved long-term patient survival. After matching and adjusting for a higher transplantation rate, this survival benefit persisted. The modality of dialysis did not affect the survival of the graft.
