Impaired sleep quality in COPD is associated with exacerbations: The CanCOLD cohort study
Chest Jun 01, 2019
Shorofsky M, et al. - Given that sleep disturbances may occur in COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) patients, predisposing to increased respiratory symptoms, researchers used data from the Canadian Cohort Obstructive Lung Disease (CanCOLD) study to examine the link between subjective sleep quality and risk of COPD exacerbations in a population-based sample. They included COPD patients who had completed 18 months’ follow-up. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and its 3 Factor scores were used to measure sleep quality. In this study including 480 participants with COPD, increased risk of COPD exacerbation was observed, over 18 months of prospective follow-up, in relation to higher baseline PSQI scores.
