Impact of visual field loss on vision-specific quality of life in African Americans: The African American Eye Disease Study
American Journal of Ophthalmology Feb 13, 2021
GrisafeII DJ, Varma R, Burkemper BS, et al. - Researchers conducted this cross-sectional, population-based cohort to clarify how visual field loss (VFL) influences the self-reported vision-specific quality of life in African Americans, who experience a disproportionate burden of visual impairment. Eligible candidates (n = 7,957) were selected who self-identified as African American, were 40 years or older and resided in Inglewood, California. Six thousand three hundred forty-seven candidates (80.0%) completed clinical eye exams. African Americans recorded the greatest impact of the VFL on their ability to complete visual tasks, particularly for driving. There was also an influence of VFL on emotional well-being, but the magnitude of correlation was around 50% lower for well-being compared with that of the task.
