Impact of severe hypoglycaemia on psychological outcomes in adults with type 2 diabetes: A systematic review
Diabetic Medicine Jul 12, 2019
Hendrieckx C, et al. - In adults with type 2 diabetes, researchers studied the effect of severe hypoglycemia on psychological outcomes. Of 3,756 abstracts reviewed for relevancy, 29 studies met inclusion criteria. Despite the constraints of empirical studies, these findings suggested that severe hypoglycemia is associated with impaired psychological outcomes in adults with type 2 diabetes (insulin- and non-insulin-treated). Effect sizes indicated that there was a stronger connection with fear of hypoglycemia than with general health status. The psychological effect of severe hypoglycemia during clinical consultations should be addressed by healthcare practitioners to assist people to minimize exposure to severe hypoglycemia and its psychological effects.
